Why did I win?

I discovered your site yesterday and really like it. But I have an unusual issue. I found the item above and put a large snipe into Bidslammer. Then later I reread the description and saw that the jacket was smaller than I thought and might not fit me, so I reduced my bid to $69, thinking I probably wouldn't win, but wouldn't mind buying it at this lower price. When I checked my Bidslammer page after the auction, it said that my $69 bid was too low and so could not be made. Just what I expected. Then I checked me email and I had a notice from eBay saying I had won the jacket for $88. What went wrong? I seem to have been successful in changing my Bidslammer snipe to $69, because that's what it says it bid for me, but it seems to also have bid the earlier, higher amount. I don't think I changed it too late, since again, my Bidslammer page shows that it bid the correct $69 amount. And I promise I didn't bid directly to eBay. Bidslammer seems to have bid both the earlier, high amount, and also attempted to bid the lower, correct amount. I just want to make sure I don't do this again. Thanks.

Hello Rob,
Thank you for your question about a snipe that fired when you did not expect it. There is a little trash can icon next to each snipe that you can click. This will remove the snipe entirely from the system.
What happened is this. At the time you tried to lower the bid to $69, that amount was already lower than the current price at the time. The software kicked back an error, "Bid must be at least $NN.NN." The $69 stayed in the input box. When you came back later, that was the error you saw. That is, the error wasn't from the snipe execution, it was from the attempt to lower the bid.
Refreshing the page would have gone back to show the original bid amount, which was unchanged.
That said, as a result of your post, we believe we should make a change to the software. We think the error message should stay, but that the bid value should be changed to whatever you entered. This would allow a customer to do what you had intended.
It's always interesting how after 15 years of operation, we still find ways to improve the service, which you just helped us do.
Thank you for taking the time to write us. We welcome any follow-up comments or further suggestions you may have.

Okay, I gotta say, this was about the most useful customer-support message I've ever gotten. Thanks very much.
