My home page indicates that I have a remaining balance of 4.75 credits. What does this mean? Does each credit equal one future snipe? Is there an expiration date?

Hello Jeff,
Your account uses the old system which was a 1% deduction per snipe (with a $5 max). Once you have used up that balance, your account begins fresh, on the NEW system. Balances and/or snipes never expire under either system.
The NEW system gives you free sniping, or you can choose to upgrade to get lots of extras:
