Cannot change eBay password

288228 8 0

I have changed my password on eBay to Bf!73p461a# and activated security key login protection.

I came here to change my eBay password, but it will not accept it.

1. Is the two-factor eBay login causing this?
2. Can you change it at your end?

Thanks,
Graham

Hello Graham,

If you are having trouble verifying your eBay password, please read and follow these steps carefully.

1. First - log into eBay directly to make sure you don't have a blocking dialog. Do not use the auto-complete! Type it in the same as you are entering it at our site.

2. In case you didn't read the last step, make sure _not_ to use the auto-complete to verify your password.

3. Also make sure there isn't an error message, i.e. asking you to update your credit card expiration date or respond to a buyer strike.

4. If that is ok, then wait 12 hours. The only problem left that it could be is if you have had too many unsuccessful login attempts from trying the wrong password. In this case eBay is temporarily giving us a captcha (security) dialog, which goes away after 12 hours. Also ensure that you have deleted all snipes for the next 18-24 hours.

So if you still have a problem tomorrow, please let us know and we can take the next step.

Thanks for the prompt reply.

I will try again tomorrow, but I think setting up two-factor authentication login at eBay (using my PayPal key device) may be preventing Bidslammer from accessing my eBay account.

Hello Graham,

Ah, yes - you must turn that off:

I did check everything listed there, but couldn't see anything about the key device. But I have found it under "Getting Started".

Might be an idea to add it to the main page where the red things to watch out for are.

Thanks.

Hello Graham,

You're right, in fact I noticed that after I linked it. We rearranged our help pages and had made a summary of the article listed below. In the article below, the PayPal thing should be listed first and it's listed 6th -- and it wasn't even listed on the page I linked!

We'll fix that up right away. Sorry for any confusion.

Yes, as people are becoming more security conscious, two-factor authentication is becoming commonplace. I didn't even know eBay had this ability until today.

Others are bound to get tripped up too, so it was probably good we were able to pin down the problem, and also realize it needs to be detailed more obviously.

I have had success in the past using Bidslammer and it's always good to know it's there if I need it.

No need to reply.

Thanks,
Graham

Hello Graham,

I agree. The "real" way is to use the eBay API. That uses this thing called Auth&Auth and it is very secure. But eBay bans usage of the API for sniping - we have to scrape the site directly.

You'll be very interested to read our new blog post this weekend - keep an eye out for it. :-) One of our competitors got banned for a while for security issues.
